I wish I could write more, but the least I could do is point out what others are saying about today, Constitution Day. The folks at the ACLU Blog of Rights are hosting a mini-symposium on the Constitution, with all ACLU projects and bloggers from all over sharing their thoughts. There are several really interesting pieces over there so I’d recommend just stopping by the site and taking a stroll. The ACLU also just started a new campaign, I Am A Constitution Voter. How very pro-civil justice!

"I would say no to them," Richard Shelby of Alabama said as Democratic leaders of the House of Representatives and Senate seek to push through a measure in the coming weeks that is necessary to put the credit program in motion.
"I don't see this as a national problem," Shelby said in an interview on CNBC television. "I see this as their problem."
He also noted the government — which has spent billions to prevent the collapse of investment bank Bear Stearns in March and mortgage giants Fannie Mae (FNM.N) and Freddie Mac (FRE.N) this week — needs to move away from the notion that major institutions are too big to fail.
Among U.S. lawmakers, Shelby's comments were the sharpest yet that automakers do not deserve help — that huge financial losses on the sharp decline in domestic market share and sales are largely a problem of their own making.
"They've seen this coming for a long time," Shelby said.
The remarks came as GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner, who has taken the lead on lobbying the issue for Detroit, was scheduled to appear at a Senate energy summit and meet privately with lawmakers later in the day.

Do more than just take Harbor Shores at its word

In a recent letter Michael Kinney claims that my reasons for opposing the taking of 22 acres of Jean Klock Park for private development are misleading (”Klock plan critics too often are misleading,” Wednesday). He tells us our park can be just like Silver Beach, jam-packed with thousands of people visiting each week, and encourages us to browse the Harbor Shores Web site in order to “clearly understand” the project.
I took his advice. There are images of a quiet, secluded beach with a couple strolling along the shore, a family of four picnicking alone or a lone sailboat at sunset. These are the views Harbor Shores officials say they must have to lure rich golfers, prospective exclusive homebuyers and investors. Who is being misled, and by whom?
Mr. Kinney says that the dunes will not be touched, yet the conversion proposal clearly states that “open,” “forested” and “grassy” duneland will be replaced with golf greens. He says that the three holes will replace an “ugly” parking lot and “unusable” wetlands. Actually, only about half of the parking lot will be replaced, and it is only a small fraction of the land in question. The existing parking lot is discreetly situated behind the dunes and does not affect the view. The conversion levitra puts a new parking lot between the dunes and the lake, which will be truly ugly.
Protected wetlands are supposed to be “unusable,” except by birds and other wildlife, as well as people who appreciate unspoiled nature. Maybe Mr. Kinney needs to do more research beyond Harbor Shores’ promotional materials. I suggest he go to www.protectjkp.com.

On Wednesday, the 45th Democratic National Convention turns its attention to a potential weak spot for Barack Obama: foreign policy. It also officially nominates its presidential ticket and yields the podium both to former President Bill Clinton and presumptive vice presidential nominee Joe Biden.
The lineup of speakers for day three of the convention — which has been tagged with the theme of "Securing America’s Future" — features a roster of Democratic foreign policy and national security heavyweights.
The list includes, among others: former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright; Senate Armed Services Committee members Evan Bayh and Jack Reed; former U.N. Ambassador Bill Richardson; retired Army Lt. General Claudia Kennedy; and Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth. Texas Rep. Chet Edwards, the only House member to be seriously vetted as a potential running mate by the Obama campaign, is expected to discuss veterans’ issues. Also addressing the convention: Senate Foreign Relations Committee member — and 2004 Democratic presidential nominee — John Kerry.
Obama’s apparent weakness on issues related to foreign policy and national security has been a matter of increasing concern to Democratic strategists. Russia’s conflict with the neighboring Republic of Georgia has highlighted the question of the candidates’ fitness to be commander in chief.
According to an August 23-24 CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll, 78 percent of registered voters believe McCain can handle the responsibilities of commander in chief. In contrast, only 58 percent believe Obama can handle those responsibilities.

See, she hates the “mainstream media,” but she’s not boring. And after all, Barr’s celebrity status was already an anomaly in Hollywood, where aging, overweight women are meant to play the cuddly matriarchs of nuclear families, not leading roles in sitcoms. Barr’s Roseanne was a paean to working class America, and while too trite by half these days compared to the hard-hitting social commentary on The Wire, at the time it was unique.
