The Anti-EBay Launches

by betsy schiffman april 29, 2008 4:06:13 pm Keepingfeesatbay james chong, bob lee and albert loh old saying a market break and they pounced on it. fasten to a year ago, when ebay’s core auction business was showing signs of predilection, chong, lee and loh (all last charles schwab execs) were plotting a new business site that would contender ebay. they talked to hoards of ebay users, and today they’ve launched their babe in arms: wigix (the “want it, got it exchange”).

Wigix aims to be everything that eBay is not. Although it’s also a commerce site, the fee structure and rating system stray from eBay conventions. For one thing: Wigix doesn’t charge a fee for anything sold for less than $25; and it charges a flat fee of $1.50 to both the buyer and seller for anything valued between $25 and $100.

Also, Wigix isn’t an auction-based system, which Chong hopes will reduce the risk of fraud. Users can use the site to keep track of all their “non-financial assets” and just like a stock market, the valuations of those goods adjust in real-time according to recent transactions.

Another major distinction between eBay and Wigix: While eBay recently revoked feedback privileges for sellers (the company said too many sellers abused the rating system for retaliatory purposes), Wigix lets buyers and sellers rate each other after a transaction.

The Oakland-based company has raised “significant” funding from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, a VC firm that, incidentally, backed Skype, which was sold off to eBay.

not unexpectedly… it’s been fun. no, really, it has. i’ve unquestionably enjoyed declaration and reading the books that were on my list (most of them). but what i’ve really liked is reading everyone’s reviews and finding more books to put on my book list. that’s what’s been the most fun.so, the brave is winding down — technically you have until april 30th, and so i’ll keep this post set up until then. gratify put a link to your final review post, or a roundup post if you’d rather do that, in the comments. (i’d do a mr. linky, but i’ve had problems with multiple linkies before, and i don’t want to misplace the review links.) i’ll do a drawing (the fourth daughter needs a kick out!) benefit of the settled goal — any book from amazon, under $25 — and some consolation prizes (something like bookmarks, or chocolate, or something along those lines) for those who participated but didn’t finish (let me skilled in around those in the comments, too). i’m hoping we’ll get to 100 reviews… that would be fun. perhaps i’ll even allow a prize out for that (i difficulty an excuse to buy a copy or two of bride and prejudice…).i entertain the idea this has been a good first defy undergo. maybe i’ll even do another a person another time (if i can possess c visit up with another fit idea). thanks so much to all those who have participated. it would maintain been very lonely without you. i think the real object to, now, is to not simulate myself fall back into the rut i was in before and keep reading books from different cultures and countries and ethnicities. different stories from different places are just one aspect that makes life richer. thanks as a service to expanding your horizons with me. :)

Connor’s brother a Panther

HSFB nq gd 082906-11.jpg

Memo to anyone trying out for the North Quincy High School football team next season: If you want to get in good with coach Jim Connor, play hard, play smart and fight through adversity.

Wearing a Carolina Panthers cap to practice couldn’t hurt, either.

Connor loves his Red Raiders, who are coming off the program’s first winning season in more than a decade. But he got a new favorite team Sunday when the Panthers selected his brother Dan, a linebacker from Penn State, in the third round of the NFL Draft.

Dan Connor, the Nittany Lions’ all-time leading tackler at his position, stayed on the board longer than most observers had predicted. But the agonizing wait – the call, at pick No. 74 overall, came around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, almost 20 hours after the draft had begun – finally paid off.

“The bottom line is that we’re happy it’s over with,” said Jim Connor, who drove to his parents’ house in Pennsylvania to watch the draft with Dan and his brother Mike. “By the end, we didn’t care where he went, we just wished that we had an answer. It feels like it’s taking years off your life, every minute that goes by.”

The delayed pick gave the Panthers a tough, hard-nosed competitor and a whole new fan base on the South Shore.

“Everyone comes up to me and talks about, ‘I saw your brother on ESPN. I saw your brother on SportsCenter,’” Jim Connor said of the stir Dan has caused among the North Quincy student body. “It’s nice to hear that they’re supporting Dan and my family. The kids are starting to feel like they almost know him, because I have pictures of him in my classroom (he teaches history), on my computer. The kids are pulling for him. It’s nice to hear. Even the opponents will say something, ‘Good luck to your brother.’”

“Just getting to know him and knowing that he’s one of our teacher’s brothers is shocking,” said junior halfback/cornerback Terrell Staley. “I’ve never really known anyone who’s known anyone famous. It’s a real big surprise.”

Speaking of which, Connor’s selection was a stunner in Charlotte, N.C., where few figured the Panthers, with multiple needs coming off a 7-9 season, would address linebacker. With Jon Beason, Na’il Diggs, Thomas Davis, Landon Johnson and Adam Seward on the roster, Carolina already had five players for three starting spots. There was speculation that Connor’s arrival could squeeze Seward out the door. If so, he could wind up with the Patriots, who courted him but did not sign him to an offer sheet as a restricted free agent this spring.

“You read these mock drafts and whenever you think a team needs a linebacker, you don’t go to that team, you go to a team that didn’t contact you, didn’t work you out, you never heard about them (being interested),” Jim said. “Those are the teams you end up with. Carolina kind of fit that mold. They didn’t bring Dan in for a workout.

“(Before making the pick) they asked him if he was hurt or if he had gotten into trouble off the field. They were just surprised he was still on the board that late in the draft. They couldn’t believe it. It’s just a weird process.”

Signing his first pro contract will take Dan Connor off the teaching/coaching career track that has served his father and two brothers so well. Jim, his dad, is an assistant at Strath Haven High outside of Philadelphia. Mike, a grad assistant at Penn State, expects to get a high school job this fall. The younger Jim Connor will head into his third season at North Quincy with some momentum.

Hey, at 6-5, the Red Raiders were only one win behind the Panthers, in five fewer games. Maybe Carolina coach John Fox should give Jim a call, too.

“He inherited a program that was really struggling,” Mike said of Jim. “Those guys, he’s got them lifting, he’s got them running. I really knew Jim would be great, just because he’s bright and he works hard at it and he’s got a great rapport with the kids. At the same time he’s disciplined, he’s tough on them. It really doesn’t shock me that that thing is going in the right direction now.”

“He has done a very good job with this team,” Staley agreed. “He’s built us, taught us to be strong, never give up. He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever …

Drink Healthy Hot Cocoa to Warm Up and Stay Healthy Too

A study, carried out by Dr Chang yong lee and colleagues at Cornell University in New York, shows that drinking a cup of hot cocoa may be the perfect way to warm up and provide your body with a helpful dose of antioxidants. The study was published in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a peer reviewed publication and the worlds largest scientific society.

Many studies over the years have proved that green tea, wine and chocolate, especially dark chocolate, are rich in antioxidants and can protect the body against a variety of diseases.

A study in China found that those who drank tea were half as likely to develop cancer as those who didnt drink tea, while another study in France suggested that a daily glass of red wine cut mens chances by 50% of having a second heart attack.

Yet this new study suggests that drinking a cup of hot cocoa may be more powerful in supplying the body in antioxidants than either tea or wine.

Red wine, tea and chocolate are high in polyphenols, which have an antioxidant effect on the body. Antioxidants protect the body against the destructive effects of free radicals and help defend against cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.

The study, headed by Dr. Chang yong lee, measured antioxidant levels in a cup of water with a standard-sized bag of green tea, a cup of water with a standard-sized bag of black tea, one glass of California red Merlot, and a cup of hot water with two tablespoons of pure cocoa powder, the equivalent of a normal-sized packet of instant hot cocoa.

Sony dcr sr 65 review

The team analyzed the antioxidant content in each drink and found that the cup of hot cocoa had double the amount of antioxidants as the glass of red wine, three times more antioxidants than the cup of green tea and five times more than black tea.

Although the antioxidant levels of cocoa can be found in candy bards, desserts, liquers and other sugar rich sources, the team suggests that it is best to opt for hot cocoa since the saturated fat content in remarkably lower than most other sources. To avoid sugar and dairy, they suggest skim or soy milk and artificial sweeteners to replace sugar.

They concluded that hot cocoa is better than cold, since the hot drink stimulates the release of more antioxidants.

Experts say that other good ways to get antioxidants include eating a wide variety of vegetables, such as tomatoes, fruits, such as oranges, and herbs, such as green tea.
